How to measure kitchen cupboard door hinges

Your step-by-step guide to measuring hinge positions

Get Your Hinge Holes Spot On

Hinge positions are the measurement people worry about most — and the one that is easiest to get right. Your new Doorfinder doors are bored to match the holes already in your existing doors, so all we need from you is where those holes sit. Record them accurately and your new doors will drop straight back onto your existing cabinets.

All you need is a tape measure, a pen and about five minutes per door. Work in millimetres throughout, always measure the back of the door where the hinge cups sit, and write every figure down as you go.

Tools required to measure kitchen door hinges

1. Gather your tools

A tape measure, a pen and paper are all you need. Work in millimetres — it is far more accurate than working in inches.

2. Lay the door face down

Where you can, unscrew the door and lay it face down on a flat surface. Every hinge measurement is taken from the back of the door, where the round hinge cups are drilled.

3. Measure to the top hinge

Measure from the top edge of the door down to the centre of the top hinge hole — not the top or bottom edge of the hole. Record the figure in millimetres.

4. Measure to the bottom hinge

Measure from the bottom edge of the door up to the centre of the bottom hinge hole, then repeat for any middle hinges, always measuring from the nearest end of the door.

Note how many hinges the door has and whether it is left or right-hanging. Illustrations below show a left-hanging door.

Top Hinge Position

Measure from the top down. With the door face down, measure from the very top edge to the centre of the top hinge hole. This is the measurement that keeps your new door sitting level with the rest of the run.

Bottom Hinge Position

Measure from the bottom up. Measure from the very bottom edge of the door to the centre of the bottom hinge hole. On most doors this mirrors the top hinge measurement, but always check rather than assume.

Middle & Extra Hinges

Taller doors often have three or more. Measure every additional hinge from the nearest end of the door, and tell us the total number of hinges so each hole is bored in exactly the right place.

Left or Right Hanging

Note which side the hinges are on. Standing in front of the closed door, hinges on the left means a left-hanging door and hinges on the right means right-hanging. Send this with your measurements so we bore the correct side.
