Standard UK Base Cabinet Height
The standard height of a UK base kitchen cabinet is 720mm.
However, the cabinet door isn’t the same height as the cabinet itself.
The industry standard is to subtract 5mm from the overall cabinet height to allow for the necessary gaps and smooth operation of the doors.
Formula:
Cabinet Height – 5mm = Door Height
For example:
Cabinet height: 720mm
Minus clearance: 5mm
Standard door height: 715mm
This is why 715mm is the most common height for standard UK base cabinet doors.
How Standard Door Widths Are Calculated
Door widths follow a similar principle.
Rather than matching the cabinet width exactly, the standard calculation is:
Cabinet Width – 4mm = Door Width
This 4mm allowance provides the clearance required between doors and neighbouring cabinets.
Most cabinet widths increase in 100mm increments, although there are a couple of common exceptions.

- Curved doors

The Best Way to Measure Replacement Kitchen Doors
If you’re measuring from the cabinet:
- Measure the overall cabinet height.
- Measure the overall cabinet width.
- Apply the standard formulas:
- Height = Cabinet height – 5mm
- Width = Cabinet width – 4mm

Measure Door Height
Measure from top to bottom. Always measure the back of the door to ensure accuracy, as the front details or bevels can skew the size. Record the exact height in millimetres.
Measure Door Width
Measure from side to side. Place your tape measure across the flat back surface of the door. Measure from the left edge to the right edge and record the width.
Top Hinge Position
Measure from the top down. Measure from the very top edge of the door down to the centre of the top hinge hole. This ensures your new door will align perfectly with your existing cabinet.
Bottom Hinge Position
Measure from the bottom up. Measure from the very bottom edge of the door up to the centre of the bottom hinge hole. Note if your door is left or right hanging based on which way it opens.
